"The Monster in Hole 18" is by Writer Elliot S. Maggin with Pencils and Inks by John Rosenberger, as Frank Walters and Murdock Lafayette are the best of friends but they grow up competing against each other in various sports. On one particular occasion they are playing a round of golf when they finally get to hole 18. Frank suddenly sees a monstrous hand reaching out of the hole but it goes unnoticed by Murdock who is concentrating on his shot. As Murdock makes the winning putt, the monstrous hand reaches out and pulls him into the hole. Frank is also sucked in and the two boys find themselves standing in front of a set of three towering monsters that seem to be speaking a strange language. The monsters announce that the draining of V-factor has begun and the two boys are plunged into a falling sensation where they find themselves competing against each other in various sports. They race down a hill on skis, they play each other in a game of tennis and they surf the waves on boards competing to win. As the two compete, they are being monitored by the monsters who are in awe of the two boys and their will to win. They reveal that they themselves must regain their will to win so they can drive out the conquering Frilians. They find themselves with a defeatist attitude that keeps them in bondage. By injecting themselves with the human lust for victory they hope to defeat their conquerors. As the boys compete, they are siphoning off quantities of V-factor which will give them the will to win. The two boys are then returned back to earth where they find themselves on the golf course again. They wonder about their strange adventure and discuss the fact that they will keep it to themselves.
"The Great Cross-Country Cloud Race" by Martin Pasko and John Rosenberger shows Larry Shaw is sailing his boat on San Francisco bay when he suddenly gets caught in a whirlpool. He is sucked down and finds himself aboard a flying cloud boat. The boat is being steered by Al Bretnor who explains that earth has become uninhabitable due to nuclear war. Humans have built floating cities in the air to survive. The year is 2137 and the surface of the earth is occupied by mutants that have been horribly deformed by radioactive fallout. Only the floating cities have avoided this terrible fate. Man's favorite past time has become building cloud ships and sailing them in the air. Larry realizes that he has been sucked through a time warp leading him to the future. Al Bretnor reveals that he is in the middle of a race but that he is also an agent for the World Investigation Agency. He mentions that one of the boats they are racing is carrying a bomb and it intends to destroy Hudson City. Hudson City was formerly known as New York City and it marks the finish line. In the meantime all racing boats must stop at designated cities to pick up cylinders to show they have made the proper pit stop on their way to Hudson. Al Bretnor mentions that all the boats have been scanned for explosives at each stop but nothing has been found. They arrive at the final stop at Deerborn but again no bomb has been found. Al Bretnor decides to continue with the race til the end in hopes of finding the bomb before they reach the finish line. Their boat is suddenly capsized by a sudden updraft. The cloud boat starts to plummet to the ground and the tiller becomes jammed. They spot a group of mutants waiting for them to crash and they desperately search for weapons to defend themselves. Larry declares that the only thing they have is those cylinders they have been picking up at each stop. He puts the cylinders together and they begin to glow. Al Bretnor quickly throws the cylinders to the ground and it results in a huge explosion! They catch up to the suspected terrorists and apprehend them. Larry assists by jumping on the boat and throwing it off balance while Al Bretnore fights the two bombers. A whirlpool suddenly appears to the side of the boat and Larry is sucked in. He finds himself floating back in San Francisco Bay as his friends come to his rescue. He ponders his great adventure and remarks that he will always think of cloud ships whenever he sees a cloud in the sky!
