Item Description
DAREDEVIL was created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett, and first appeared in DAREDEVIL #1 (1964). The son of boxer 'Battlin' Jack' Murdock, Matt Murdock grew up in the relative poverty of Hell's Kitchen with much reverence for his father, who constantly pressed him to study instead of playing with his friends. In turn, they taunted him with the nickname DAREDEVIL since he always went back to studying and secretly training in his father's gym instead of doing things with them.Matt was blinded by toxic chemicals, but learned to hone his physical skills and other senses to the point where he was a fearsome force for good in his neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, even after opening a law firm there. One of is many enemies, aside from Kingpin, Bullseye and occasional lover Electra, was KILLGRAVE, this issue's bad guy!
In "Killgrave, The Unbelievable Purple Man", a strange man by the name of Killgrave, with purple skin, walks into a bank and demands a large sum of money, and surprisingly, the bank clerk offers it without question. Quickly arrested by police, the "Purple Man" is brought before a judge. where he refuses to be represented by a lawyer. The judge assigns him one anyway: Matt Murdock!
Killgrave convinces his jailer to release him, but DAREDEVIL follows him, only to see him amass a small army of strong men from a local gym, and take over the Ritz Plaza Hotel.
DAREDEVIL chases the Purple Man to the roof, but Killgrave orders Karen to stand on the ledge of the building and forces Daredevil to comply by holding him at gunpoint. Killgrave explains how he got his uncanny powers. While spying on a lab for a communist country, he was accidentally doused with a chemical. When he was caught by the plant guards, he found that he was able to bend their will, and soon decided it would be best to become a criminal.
DAREDEVIL saves Karen and captures the Purple Man and turns him over to the Police. Really nice artwork by Joe Orlando.
This is a well-preserved copy of DAREDEVIL #4 with a strong binding and minimal toning of its 52-year old pages! There are very minor faults with the cover: a bent corner, 3 or 4 edge chips, along with a faint date stamp. There is a bit of handwriting on the title page. It still has good eye-appeal and that leads us to grading this a 5.0 VG/FN. The Overstreet Guide feels $93 is appropriate -- we feel $78 plus our L•O•W shipping is even MORE appropriate!
