Item Description
DAREDEVIL was created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett, and first appeared in DAREDEVIL #1 (1964). The son of boxer 'Battlin' Jack' Murdock, Matt Murdock grew up in the relative poverty of Hell's Kitchen with much reverence for his father, who constantly pressed him to study instead of playing with his friends. In turn, they taunted him with the facetious nickname DAREDEVIL since he always went back to studying and secretly training in his father's gym instead of doing things with them.Matt was blinded by toxic chemicals, but learned to hone his physical skills and other senses to the point where he was a fearsome force for good in his neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, even after opening a law firm there.
Here in issue #18, you get "There Shall Come a Gladiator!", written by Stan Lee and illustrated by John Romita (with inks by Frank Giacoia).
A burly costume store owner decides it is really the clothes that make the man and begins his career as the GLADIATOR. Foggy gets a DAREDEVIL costume from store owner Melvin Potter who talks the tubby lawyer into setting up a staged super fight to impress his girl;friend. Thinking his fight with Foggy will draw out the real DAREDEVIL, GLADIATOR goes after him for real and Matt has to take a hand in rescuing his friend. In the night and the fog, everyone assumes it is Foggy as DAREDEVIL that beat the GLADIATOR.
This is a pretty well-preserved copy of DAREDEVIL #18, with a strong binding and minimal toning of its 57-year old pages! There is a general worn feel to this copy, there is a date stamp on the cover, and a bit of handwriting at the top of the splash page. But it still has good eye-appeal and good color and that leads us to grading this a 5.0 VG/FN. The Overstreet Guide feels $42 is appropriate for this grade -- but we feel $20 plus our L•O•W shipping is even MORE appropriate!
••• And remember - there is no further postage charge if you buy additional items, so load up on some of our other Silver Age Marvels, if that's your thing!
