CONAN THE CIMMERIAN, from Dark Horse Comics, went back to the basics, with more direct adaptations of Robert E. Howard's novels and stories than Marvel had offered near the end of their run.

These four issues, from 2010, #22-25, adapt Howard's novelette 'Shadows in the Moonlight', first published in Weird Tales pulp magazine in April 1934. It was first adapted In comic book form by Roy Thomas, John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala in _Savage Sword of Conan_ #4 in 1974, then by Tim Truman and Tomás Giorello in these four issues, with a change of title back to Robert E. Howard's originally-penned "Iron Shadows in the Moonlight".

In this tense and atmospheric adaptation, CONAN rescues a beautiful fugitive being pursued by her evil master. They sail a raft to a dark and mysterious island with a strange ancient temple, where they take refuge. Conan saves the beauty again, from a savage pirate crew . . and then from a giant black beast who calls the island home! Timothy Truman handled the scripting of this adaptation, and Tomás Giorello supplied the exciting, painterly artwork.

Each issue contains a back-up story -'The Adventures of Two-Gun Bob' - about the life of Robert E. Howard. And the final issue - with its Frank Frazetta tribute cover by Cary Nord - includes five pages of Conan pin-ups by other comic book artists.
