Item Description
CONAN THE BARBARIAN was rolling along in late 1971 as one of MARVEL's top-selling titles, on the strength of Roy Thomas' adaptations of Robert E. Howard's tales of the Cimmerian, and the evocative art of illustrator Barry Smith. Here are two issues that use short stories and poems penned by Howard in the 1930s as the basis for eerie and fantastical tales!Issue #9 , the last 15¢ CONAN, presents "Garden of Fear!", an adaptation of a Robert E. Howard short story from the age of pulps! In it, Conan and Jenna are the guests of a primitive mountain tribe, when Jenna is kidnapped by a mysterious winged creature. This creature is the last survivor of his race and takes Jenna to a tower surrounded by flesh-eating flowers. Conan uses a herd of woolly mammoths to scale the tower, kill the creature and save Jenna.
In the next issue, "Beware the Wrath of ANU!", Conan teams with Burgun in thievery. Burgun is betrayed and hung. Conan avenges his death by killing Aron and a priest. Jenna leaves Conan for Igon. Red Bull is freed and ascends into the heavens. This is an oversized, 52-page squarebound issue, so you also get a BLACK KNIGHT story from 1956, and the Marie Severin-illustrated adaptation of Howard's poem "The King and the Oak", featuring KING KULL!
These two early CONANs look great for their age of 50 years, with strong bindings, glossy covers, supple pages, and good color. No abnormal toning, and no tears, chips, stress lines or creases. Overstreet values these two 7.0 FN/VF copies together at $60. Our price is better than that -- $47. Our L•O•W shipping makes this an even better deal -- don't miss out!
