Item Description
By 1976, Marvel's CONAN THE BARBARIAN was approaching the early stages of its own 'Middle Age' in its 20-year run, memorably pairing the talents of Roy Thomas and his original scripts, and the power of John Buscema's art. These two issues combine into one great story where CONAN first meets his greatest love - BÊLIT the She-Pirate - and learns of her background
Issue #58 presents "Queen of the Black Coast!", wherein CONAN barely escapes the law by boarding a ship heading due south. Then off the coast of Kush, the ship is unexpectedly boarded by the pirate queen BÊLIT and her Black Corsairs. CONAN is offered a chance to live if he can defeat the warrior Odongo in battle. CONAN is victorious and Odongo dies. BÊLIT is impressed – and they quickly become lovers, with CONAN being elevated to her second-in-command.
Then in #59, in "The Ballad of BÊLIT!", CONAN hears her entire 'origin' recounted, and learns that she is the rightful heir to the throne of Asaglun. When she was a child, her uncle overthrew and killed her father, the king. BÊLIT escaped and the legend grew that BÊLIT was the daughter of Derketa, goddess of death. She grew up to become the best warrior of the tribe that had taken her in, but the jealous Chief sent her on a suicide mission to reclaim a relic from the Mound-Dwellers, and ended up getting killed himself. As the new chief, BÊLIT turned to piracy in order to raise funds for her revenge.
Both issues have great covers by Buscema . . and the interiors showcase his dynamic pencilling, inked by Steve Gan.
These two CONANs look great for their age of 51 years, with strong bindings, glossy covers, supple pages, and good color. No abnormal toning, and no tears, chips, stress lines or creases. The Overstreet Price Guide values these two 8.0 VF copies together at $17. Our price is much better than that -- only $13!
And our L•O•W shipping makes this an even better deal -- don't miss out!
