Item Description
CONAN THE BARBARIAN was rolling along in early 1973 as one of MARVEL's top-selling titles, on the strength of Roy Thomas' adaptations of Robert E. Howard's tales of the Cimmerian, and the evocative art of illustrator Barry Smith. Here are two issues that showcase Howard's mastery of arcane jeopardy, and Thomas' brilliance at creating characters!Issue #23 marked the debut of the wildly-popular character, RED SONJA, created by Roy Thomas, but based on characters from Robert E. Howard's pulp fiction stories. Howard's Red SonYa was a swashbucler from the 17th century, but Thomas redefined her and moved her to the Hyborean Age where she became both a comrade and adversary for CONAN.
Issue #24 proved to be artist Barry Smith's last as artist on the series. These two issues offer a sweeping storyline that finds CONAN and RED SONJA in "The Shadow of the Vulture" and the award-winning "The Song of Red Sonja". Among the highlights are CONAN meeting RED SONJA for the first time, she saving his life twice before he kills and beheads The VULTURE. In #24 they start a bar-fight, bathe in a fountain, scale temple walls, break in and steal a snake-tiara, and fight a magical snake. At the end SONJA tricks CONAN, and leaves for Pah-Disha (and her starring role in the first issue of SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN.
These two key issues of CONAN THE BARBARIAN look great for their age of nearly 50 years, with strong bindings, glossy covers, supple pages, and good color. No abnormal toning, and no tears, chips, stress lines or creases. Overstreet values these two 8.0 VF copies together at $124. Our price is much better than that -- $104. . . with FREE SHIPPING!
