CONAN THE BARBARIAN was rolling along in late 1972 as one of MARVEL's top-selling titles, on the strength of Roy Thomas' adaptations of Robert E. Howard's tales of the Cimmerian, and the evocative art of illustrator Barry Smith.  Here are two issues that use short stories and poems penned by Howard in the 1930s as the basis for eerie and fantastical tales!

Issue #21 presents "The Monster of the Monoliths!", an adaptation of a Robert E. Howard short story from the age of pulps, 'The Black Stone'.  In it, CONAN is taken captive in Makkalet when he defects from the Turanian army. CONAN joins and is betrayed by Makkalet forces, and fights a giant toad-god.

Issue #22 is an unusual case where the cover does not reflect the interior story!  The original "Shadow of the Vulture" cover had already been completed when it was discovered that the interior artwork had been LOT IN THE MAIL!  So the decision was made to reprint "The Coming of Conan!" from CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1, and a mad scramble began to recreate the art for the proper story, which appeared in the following issue!

These two early CONANs look great for their age of nearly 50 years, with strong bindings, glossy covers, supple pages, and good color.  No abnormal toning, and no tears, chips, stress lines or creases. Overstreet values these two 7.0 FN/VF copies together at $40.
