50 years ago last Fall, Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith crafted a comic that is still hailed as one of the best series ever -- Marvel's CONAN the BARBARIAN. It sprang up on newsstand shelves as something entirely different from all the tights and capes next to it, and acclaim and enthusiasm built like an avalanche! Robert E. Howard had created CONAN in the 1930s, and there had even been a Mexican CONAN comic book in the 1950s, but it took Marvel, Thomas and Windsor-Smith to create a true sensation!

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #2 is set in the pseudo-historical Hyborian Age and gives us "Lair of the Beast-Men!" written by Roy Thomas in the style of Conan's creator. While traveling through Aesgaard, Conan comes upon the dead remains of a giant Beast-Man. He then spies a young woman and chases after her hoping to ask her some questions. The woman, Moira, baits Conan into a trap and he is ambushed by two brutish ape men.

The beasts lay him low and drag him down into their underground kingdom of Brutheim. They put him in a dungeon filled with "manlings". These men have been raised in slavery and have never once traveled to the surface world.

Later, Conan is marched out into the middle of a battle arena and presented to the Beast-Men's king, Gha-Kree. The king decides that he will be of great sport in the arena games. Conan is later brought back out into the arena and forced to fight against a savage snow-lion. Conan kills the lion which inspires the Manlings to revolt. They run out into the arena, shocking the Beast-Men who have never before seen such courage and are unsure how to react. Many run in fear.

Conan leaps in anger and slashes the king across the back of his neck with his sword. The other Beast-Men are either buried beneath the rubble of the collapsing arena or flee.

This 50 year-old copy of CONAN THE BARBARIAN #2 is in exceptionally nice condition - no stress lines, bent corners or toning - the cover still has its gloss and the pages are near-white with bright colors.
