Item Description
CONAN THE BARBARIAN was rolling along in 1972 as one of MARVEL's top-selling titles, on the strength of Roy Thomas' adaptations of Robert E. Howard's tales of the Cimmerian, and the evocative art of illustrator Barry Smith. This issue features two of the pair's earlier efforts from both SAVAGE TALES #1 and from CHAMBER OF DARKNESS #4."The Frost Giant's Daughter", the Thomas/Smith story that kicked off the long run of Marvel's SAVAGE TALES, tells how CONAN, then part of an Aesir war party, is just finishing off a band of Vanir in the snowy plains, but soon stumbles and falls due to his injuries. A beautiful, scantily clad maiden appears to him, and when she tempts him, he chases her into the mountains, fully knowing she might be luring him to an ambush.
When her FROST GIANT BROTHERS appear, he swiftly slays them and continues his chase, finally catching her. She prays to her father, the god YMIR, to save her, and she vanishes in a flash of blue light. CONAN collapses, and is rescued by his Aesir companions, who, while they don't entirely believe his story, are disquieted with the remnants of a dress CONAN holds in his hand!
In an early prototype of CONAN, the second story, "The Sword and the Sorcerers", STARR THE SLAYER kills a Wizard, then travels to the present and kills his own writer!
This is a good-looking copy of CONAN THE BARBARIAN #16 with a solid binding, glossy cover, and no tears, chops or pieces missing. We conservatively grade it a 7.0 FN/VF, which Overstreet values at $25. We'll swing our sword and cut that down to just $18, which puts this issue in your hands at the most affordable price on HipComic!!
And our always-L•O•W shipping makes this deal seem almost BARBARIC!
