50 years ago last Fall, Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith crafted a comic that is still praised by CONAN fans everywhere -- Marvel's CONAN the BARBARIAN #1. It sprang up on newsstand shelves as something entirely different from all the tights and capes next to it, and acclaim and enthusiasm built like an avalanche! Robert E. Howard had created CONAN in the 1930s, and there had even been a Mexican CONAN comic book in the 1950s, but it took Marvel, Thomas and Windsor-Smith to create a true sensation!

CONAN THE BARBARIAN #1 is set in the pseudo-historical Hyborian Age and presents "The Coming of Conan!" as a perfect introduction to a type of hero Marvel fans had never seen. Thomas' script and Windsor-Smith's primal artwork perfectly evoked a lost time and place that stirred memories of the long-ago brutalities of life, and set the stage for 274 more issues of CONAN's adventures.

In this first issue we see a young Conan, who has set out away from his Cimmerian home and tribe, and finds himself a mercenary with divided loyalties. Conan kills a soldier named Gondur and then saves the life of an Aesir named Olav. Soon Conan and Olav are fighting three winged demons, who eventually fly Conan to a great height . . and drop him!

When Conan regains consciousness he is inside a cave which appears to be a massive temple. Inside is an aged shaman named Sharkosh, and his young maiden, Tara. Sharkosh tells Conan that he safeguards the power of Star-Stone - a device that can project images of the past and the future - and shows him visions of his future, being crowned King and sitting on a regal throne!

But Conan knows the stone is also responsible for creating the demons he fought, and manages to destroy the gem, which erases the demons, but also unfortunately sends the beautiful Tara back to the dimension from which she came.

Creepy, heroic and magical, all at the same time!
