Before there was CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED . . there was CLASSIC COMICS!

CLASSIC COMICS Was created by Albert Kanter in 1941 and finished its first run in 1969, producing 169 issues of adaptations of great literature. It was published by the Gilberton Co. from 1941 to 1947 before changing its name to CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED. This issue - #34 - was the very last issue of CLASSIC COMICS before the name and format change! (The inside of the front cover actually explains why they are changing their name!) This is the First Printing of #34 and is full and complete.

This big 62-page comic presents an adaptation of Jules Verne's 1875 novel, MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, the tale of five Civil War Union prisoners of war who escape from Richmond, Va. via balloon during the fighting and crash on an uncharted island. Illustrated by Robert Hayward Webb, it tells of the escapees' efforts to create a semblance of civilized life on the island, but are confronted by natural dangers and unexplained mysteries . . which eventually revealed to be the result of the secret aid of CAPTAIN NEMO, of 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, whose secret home port for his submarine NAUTILUS is under this volcanic island!

Also in this issue, there are three text pieces, one of which is a biography of JULES VERNE!

This copy has pretty obviously been enjoyed over its 76 year life -- the cover has a subscription fold and the back cover has some soiling. But the binding is solid, and the pages have relatively little toning for their age. Pages are supple, with no tears, and the color is good. We'll conservatively grade this copy a 4.5 VG+ which Overstreet values at $118 for this first printing of issue #34 . . . but we'll make acquiring this comic easier than an escape in a hot air balloon, and price it at only $98 for you VERNE fans!
