Item Description
Jim Steranko was a one-man comic-book studio! Here on CAPTAIN AMERICA #111 and #113 he provided the pencils and inks and colors for the cover and redesigned the 'Captain America' logo! Between the covers he plotted the storiesand illustrated them! It's surprising Stan Lee didn't just have Steranko and Kirby take over the company! These two issues are the second and third issues of a 3-issue storyline about Cap's supposed death and its effect on BUCKY and others.
Here in CAPTAIN AMERICA #111, Steranko dishes up "Tomorrow You Live, Tonight I Die!" in this 11th issue following CAP receiving his own series. In it, CAP is ambushed by HYDRA assassins at the command of Madame Hydra. The mission fails and later RICK JONES joins CAP in a training session. Alone, Rick picks up a message meant for Cap that causes him to hallucinate. Abducted by Hydra Cap searches for Rick and is attacked by a Hydra robot. Rick escapes & tries to warn Cap, who realizes he could make a good partner. Cap appears to leap from a rooftop into the river through a barrage of HYDRA gunfire. The police find only his costume and a mask with the facial features of Steve Rogers, suggesting "Rogers" was a fake identity.
In #113's "The Strange Death of Captain America", the media is full of reports Cap's death and explains that "Steve Rogers" was a fake identity! The Avengers, Nick Fury, Sharon Carter and several SHIELD agents hold a wake but are suddenly gassed by HYDRA. Rick Jones follows to the cemetery and is almost caught, but Cap unexpectedly appears on a motorcycle, very much alive! A battle follows, ending when a set of missiles miss their target and kill Madame Hydra. Cap reveals he faked his death in order to retain his secret identity.
#11 has a full page tribute to Salvador Dali by Steranko, and also depicts a kidnapper who looks a lot like Stan Lee!
The center spreads are legendary!
These copies of the key CAPTAIN AMERICA issues #111 & #113 are in nice shape for being 52 years old! There are no ragged edges, the binding is strong, there is only minimal toning and the covers still have a bit of gloss. All these factors contribute to a conservative grading of 6.5 FN+, for which Overstreet suggests an aggregate price of $96 due to the significant event of Rick Jones becoming BUCKY for the next half-dozen issues . . and, of course, STERANKO's artwork! Our price for the pair? - just $75 . . with our always-L•O•W shipping of only $2!
No STERANKO collection is complete without these!
