CAPTAIN ACTION actually started his comic book career as an Action Figure toy from IDEAL, Inc. as an answer to competitor toymaker HASBRO's immensely popular GI JOE 'Doll for Boys'!! Created in 1966, the figure came with multiple masks and costumes that could transform him into Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Captain America, and other heroes, but the toy suffered declining interest, and was dropped in 1968 . . just as DC was creating a comic book showing CAPTAIN ACTION's exploits.

So here is CAPTAIN ACTION #2 from December of 1968. It continues the Jim Shooter-created back story for the CAPTAIN of possessing archaic power-infused coins of legendary gods from the Greek, Roman, and Nordic pantheons, and dispensed with his ability to morph into other heroes. The comic added his arch-nemesis, the half-alien DR. EVIL, the father of CAPTAIN ACTION's deceased wife!!

"The Battle Begins!" is the book-length story of CAPTAIN ACTION and ACTION BOY (his actual son!) try to retrieve the 'magic coins' stolen from them, and use the SILVER STREAK, their amphibious car, to chase the thief. This scenario of CAPTAIN ACTION both using the powers of the magic coins, and trying to regain the stolen ones, continues throughout the 5-issue run of his comic.

What is worthwhile about this merchandise-tie-in book is the great artwork by two legends: Gil Kane on Pencils, and Wally Wood Inking!
