THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD began publication in August-September of 1955. Originally an adventure series featuring several non-related vignettes per issue, the title eventually evolved into a team-up book, with BATMAN sharing the spotlight feature throughout most of its run. But before that came about, the Silver Age HAWKMAN was developed in 9 early issues by writer Gardner Fox and artist Joe Kubert.

Here is the 5th outing of the new HAWKMAN: Thanagarian Police Officer KATAR HOL. THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #43 gives insight into the events that shaped this new HAWKMAN, along with his wife, SHAYERA HOL/HAWKGIRL, and shows how the familiar hawk-wings and hawk-masks came to be.

In "The Masked Marauders of Earth!" , Katar and Shayera receive word from Earth that the MANHAWKS - giant alien bird creatures who once plagued Thanagar and wear special human face masks that shoot eye beams that displace matter - are committing crimes in Midway City. As the couple travels to Earth to deal with the threat, KATAR remembers how the MANHAWKS were originally responsible for the establishment for the Thangarian police force by his father.

Despite setbacks, the HAWKS pursue the MANHAWKS to northern Canada and use a science-based solution (one of Gardner Fox's trademark specialties!) to defeat the alien invaders!

A great story enhanced by the powerful and distinctive art of Joe Kubert.

This 60 year old copy of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #43 is in 4.0 VG condition - it has assorted nicks, stress lines and ragged edges. But the spine is strong and nothing mars the great art inside.
