Item Description
THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD began publication in August-September of 1955. Originally an anthology series featuring adventure tales from past ages with characters such as the Silent Knight, the Viking Prince, the Golden Gladiator, and Robin Hood, the title eventually, with issue #59, evolved into a team-up book, with BATMAN sharing the spotlight feature throughout most of its run. Here in issue #98 from the Fall of 1971 BATMAN teams up with The PHANTOM STRANGER in a story featuring the great Jim Aparo's very first artwork on BATMAN --- a character who would become identified as being among his greatest works . . as well as his long run on The PHANTOM STRANGER!! What a coincidence - and it started right here!
The 22-pg lead story, "Mansion of the Misbegotten!" tells of BATMAN attempting to care for the family of a dear departed friend, but instead being sucked in to a gruesome Satanic cult! It takes the preternatural skills of The PHANTOM STRANGER to rescue him from being sacrificed by his friend's widow and their son! Aparo handles pencils, inks and even lettering on this lead story!
Next up is a short PHANTOM STRANGER story by John Broome and Carmine Infantino, "The Killer Shadow!", from issue #2 of the STRANGER's own title.
Then you get an 8-yr old reprint of the CHALLENGERS OF THE UNKNOWN in "One CHALLENGER Must Die!", by Arnold Drake and Bob Brown, wherein the team battles the Volcano Men!
And instead of a Letters Page, Jim Aparo discusses his background and career . . and the Editor highlights the suggestions he's received for possible BATMAN team-ups for the upcoming issue #100!
This is a great-looking copy of a milestone in Aparo's career! The binding is strong on this 52-pg issue, the pages are supple and bright, there are no real flaws that we can see other than a folded split at the top of the back cover . We conservatively grade this handsome key issue a 6.0 FN. Overstreet values this issue in this condition at $10!!. But we're willing to part with it for $8, with our always-low shipping of just $2.
