THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD began publication in August-September of 1955. Originally an adventure series featuring several non-related vignettes per issue, the title eventually evolved into a team-up book, with BATMAN sharing the spotlight feature throughout most of its run.

Here in issue #89 from April/May of 1970, inside the front cover by Neal Adams, is the story "Arise! Ye Ghosts of Gotham!" written by Bob Haney and illustrated by Ross Andru and Mike Esposito. It concerns a quasi-religious group called the Hellerites, a group who centuries ago owned the land that later became known as Gotham City. The forefathers of Gotham had forced the Hellerites out off the land, and now they have returned with their apparent messiah and founder Josiah Heller, who was prophesied to come back and threaten to turn Gotham City into a desert unless the land was turned over to his followers.

BATMAN is asked to look into the matter as the Hellerties start trying to take claim of the city. As Bruce Wayne, owner of most of the property in Gotham City, BATMAN turns his land holdings over to Heller, while as the Caped Crusader, he investigates the group.

Meanwhile, detecting supernatural forces at work, the PHANTOM STRANGER also arrives in Gotham to confront the leader Josiah, which leads to he and BATMAN joining forces to learn the truth behind Josiah's apparent supernatural powers. The investigation is also joined by DR. THIRTEEN, who also has come to the city to debunk the supernatural events as an elaborate hoax, bringing him to blows with PHANTOM STRANGER.

As BATMAN is attacked in his home by a possessed ROBIN, he soon learns that there are actually TWO Josiah Hellers, one of them the ghost of the real Josiah, who is raising the ghost of the dead Hellerites to haunt Gotham City, as well as a phony trying to cash in on the Hellerite curse. BATMAN and a revived PHANTOM STRANGER expose the fake as con-man Karl Loftus, who has partial amnesia and actually believes he is a descendant of Josiah Heller. With the truth revealed and Loftus remembering who he is and admitting his scam, the ghost of Josiah and the Hellerites return to their eternal rest.

A whopper of a tale, that is determined to have happened between issues #6 and #7 of The PHANTOM STRANGER's own comic.

This 52 year old copy of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #89 is in 6.0 FN condition - it has a couple of cover nicks, a small cover crease, and a minor edge dent. But the spine is strong and nothing mars the great art inside.
