THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD began publication in August-September of 1955. Originally an adventure series featuring several non-related vignettes per issue, the title eventually evolved into a team-up book, with BATMAN sharing the spotlight feature throughout most of its run.

But here in issue #42 from the Summer of 1962, the sole stars are HAWKMAN and HAWKGIRL in what is essentially the second attempt to garner enough interest in the marriedf superheroes to give the winged one his own comic book (which actually came to pass less than two years later, with the debut of HAWKMAN #1 in May of 1964).

In "The Menace of the Dragonfly Riders", written by legendary DC stalwart Gardner Fox, and dynamically illustrated by another legend - Joe Kubert - we find Hawkman and Hawkwoman back on their home planet of Thanagar after being called in to help the planet police with a crime wave perpetrated by the Dragonfly Riders.

But the HAWK pair soon discover the gang is but android robots and are controlled by their old foe and recent prison escapee BYTH ROK, and his small gang of three (who are able to transform into any animal they imagine!). A battle ensues and the Winged Wonders defeat the bad guys (are you surprised?) using police tactics they learned on Earth . . . and HAWKMAN is awarded by the Thanagarian Government the prestigious HONOR WINGS, which are then attached to his existing helmet forever more (in a nice design-change for HAWKMAN!).

This 63-year-old copy of THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD #42 is in 2.0 GD condition, which one look at the front cover and its missing edge piece will explain! The pages are somewhat limp, and there are a couple of small handwritten numbers on the back cover, but the spine is strong ➡️ and nothing mars the great art inside.
