Item Description
Initially published by NOVELTY PRESS, BLUE BOLT COMICS, one of the earliest comic books titled after a single character, ran for 101 issues, cover-dated June 1940 to August 1951. Its namesake hero BLUE BOLT was created by writer-artist JOE SIMON in 1940, for FUNNIES INC., one of the earliest comic-book "packagers" that produced outsourced comics on demand for publishers entering the fledgling medium. By the second issue, Simon had enlisted JACK KIRBY as the series co-writer/artist, starting the first pairing of the future comic book legends who shortly thereafter created CAPTAIN AMERICA and other characters. In 1949, NOVELTY PRESS sold its assets, including BLUE BOLT, to series cover artist L.B.COLE due to the growing criticism over violence in comic books. Using his new assets, COLE began his own company, STAR PUBLICATION.
Here in the 36-page BLUE BOLT #108 from early 1951, inside a cover by L.B. COLE, you get four stories starring 4 different heroic characters, including BASIL WOLVERTON'S SPACEHAWK in "The Battling Bullet Ships". You also get SUB-ZERO, the man with the power to freeze anything, THE PHANTOM SUB, an advanced underwater marvel for the preservation of justice, and the book's title character, BLUE BOLT, in a tale of a forgotten people and their eerie cult!
This is a great-looking copy of this 72-year old title! It's in pretty wonderful shape for its age, with a strong binding, minimal toning, and no readily-visible faults or blemishes other than a tiny bit of pencil writing on the front cover, a 2mm split at the edge, and a half-inch tear at the bottom of an interior page. We grade it a solid 7.5 VF- which Overstreet values at a pretty steep $450! . . . but we're pricing it at only $330 . . with FREE shipping!
It's a great example of the excitement of comics' early age held for readers!
