_BEWARE THE CREEPER_ was the brainchild of SPIDER-MAN creator and first artist STEVE DITKO. Published by DC Comics, the series debuted in 1968 but sadly was cancelled after only six issues. BEWARE THE CREEPER began in SHOWCASE #73, in a story plotted and drawn by Steve Ditko. DC's policy at the time was to give a character a single appearance in _SHOWCASE_ as an introduction before launching their series. Two months later, the first issue of _BEWARE THE CREEPER _was released with a cover date of June 1968.

These four issues introduce, and tell the story of the villain named PROTEUS, a quick change artist who tries to take control of Gotham City's crime gangs, and who battles with TV reporter Jack Ryder: THE CREEPER (who could rearrange his molecular structure from normal Jack Ryder to a manic character wearing a green wig and yellow make-up, with a large, shaggy red rug glued to his shoulders and constant maniacal laughter!).

The storyline started in these 4 issues of BEWARE THE CREEPER would eventually be concluded seven years later in SUPER-TEAM FAMILY #2, published in 1975.  These 4 issues showcase some of Steve Ditko's most dynamic layouts and poses (with an assist by Jack Sparling on the second half of #6)
