Item Description
THE CREEPER was Jack Ryder, a local newsman and TV personality, whose outspoken commentary got him fired from "respectable" news outlets. Working in network security, he was assigned to guard Soviet defector Professor Emil Yatz, whose serum inventions came together to turn Jack into a superhero: a serum to heal any wound instantly, and provide extra strength and stamina in the process. He could also rearrange his molecular structure - he was normal Jack Ryder in one state, and in the other, he was wearing a green wig and yellow make-up, with a large, shaggy red rug glued to his shoulders! If this get-up sounds like something worn by a character who wasn't entirely sane that is not an inaccurate impression. And Yatz's serum didn't help Jack at one point, in fact, it actually drove him over the edge. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. It doesn't seem to have made him less effective as a superhero, and maniacal laughter does have the advantage of unnerving crooks.
BEWARE the CREEPER was the spotlight feature of DC's SHOWCASE #73, his initial appearance in the Spring of 1968. One month later came this first issue of his own title, a series that only lasted for 6 issues. Steve Ditko was at the top of his 'odd hero' talents, and his work had matured since his early days on SPIDER-MAN.
This is a great-looking 52-year old Silver Age classic -- no tears, pieces missing, or abnormal toning. The binding is strong, the colors are bright . . and the only fault we see is a small date notation (3/28 - the acknowledged publication date) on the front cover. We grade this a conservative 7.0 FN/VF. . . which Overstreet values at $39 . . . but we're pricing it at $25 . . with our always-L•O•W shipping!
BEWARE of missing out! This is the most affordable #1 on HipComic!
