This issue is a very heartfelt synopsis of BATMAN's origin and entire career, as told by Bruce Wayne's son, Damian. He is reciting the history of his father's exploits to three young boys - Bob, Jerry and Bill - referencing Bob Kane, Jerry Robinson, and Bill Finger, the creative triumvirate of BATMAN's creation!

From witnessing his parents murdered, to adopting the symbol of a bat to strike fear in the hearts of criminals, to becoming the guardian of a young circus performer who also saw his parents killed. As BATMAN and ROBIN they are a successful crimefighting team ridding Gotham City of its darker elements . . until Dick Grayson leaves the team to find his own way as NIGHTWING.

BATMAN soon finds another lost youth to take on the role of ROBIN, but it ends in tragedy and he finds himself lost in the darkness once again. A third and more promising young man figures out BATMAN and NIGHTWING’S secret identities and assumes the role of ROBIN to help BATMAN ease the guilt he feels over his failure with the others. BATMAN soon realizes that his proteges - along with a son he never knew about - have turned into an extended family, each one searching for guidance and acceptance from him.

When BATMAN is tragically taken away from his family, the young heroes do the only thing left open to them. They honor him by carrying on his legacy and NIGHTWING assumes the mantle of BATMAN and takes BATMAN'S son as the new ROBIN. But this Robin is headstrong and willful. When the real BATMAN miraculously returns to them, they receive the greatest gift they could ever hope to receive from him, his approval. With his blessing they continue on as BATMAN AND ROBIN, the dynamic duo, partners, friends, family.
