BATMAN began publication in the Spring of 1940 and was published until 2011. Batman was initially released as a quarterly magazine, but changed to a bi-monthly format with issue #6. Beginning in 1954, National Periodical Publications began publishing eight issues of Batman a year. It wasn't until issue #260, in 1975, that DC Comics began publishing Batman on a monthly basis!

Here in issue #23 from late Spring 1944, you get 4 great stories featuring the cast of DC's 2nd most popular character of the period. Although the stories carry the art credit of Bob Kane, the three BATMAN and ROBIN stories are illustrated by Dick Sprang, and the ALFRED story has art by Jerry Robinson.

In "The Upside Down Crimes",BATMAN and ROBIN must stop the Joker's mad schemes, as he commits several "up-side down crimes", several that involve movie stars of the 1940s, that leave the Caped Crusaders literally standing on their heads. "Damsel in Distress" tells how Dick'scrush on a girl leads him and the BATMAN into a case involving kidnapping and murder.

In "The Adventures of Alfred" Bruce hires out Alfred to a neighbor who is having week-end guests, and whose butler is sick. Alfred's blind luck allows him to solve yet another case involving an "inside job" at the Upsitart residence. And "Pelt Plunderers!" tells how BATMAN & ROBIN head up into the frozen north to assist the Royal Canadian Mounted Police stop a gang of thieves who plunder beaver pelts trapped by locals and who then sell them for big profits, which they plan to spend back in the States.

This is a really lovely and clean copy of this 78-year-old comic book! It has a a strong square binding and 52 supple, bright pages! No pieces missing or ragged edges - we conservatively grade it (and so did the professional auction house from whence it came) a 6.5 FN+. Overstreet grades this issue in this condition at $2000.00!.
