BARNYARD COMICS debuted in June 1944, as a clever moonlighting gig for the cartoonists spending their days animating at TERRYTOONS studio, and a few smaller, New York-area animation shops. Organized by Ned Pines, the various funny animal artists submitted their own stories, and they were compiled in a number of different comic books under the STANDARD COMICS banner.

Here in the premiere issue of BARNYARD COMICS, Pines was pretty much running anything up the flagpole, hoping someone would salute . . or that one or more characters would prove popular enough to be standouts! So you get characters as varied as Torchy the Little Red Duck, Sappy the Sportsman, Peter Pigg (who actually became a recurring feature), Hetty Hepcat, Chippy Chipmunk, Simp Squirrel and others, in the 52 pages that provide a cornucopia of varied art talents!

This nice, tight, 78-year-old perfect example of 1940s Funny Animal silliness has weathered well - pages are clean and not brittle or faded, and the binding is strong. There are some weak creases on the front cover, and unobtrusive date stamps on the back cover but we rarely see comics from this era that look so nice! Graded conservatively at a 7.0 FN/VF, Overstreet says $118 for this #1 issue in this condition is the going price. . but we say $95!!
