MARVEL is not above laughing at itself, and here's a prime example - AVENGERS #1.5 from 1999, its 44 pages loaded with spoofs and satires of all the AVENGERS team members, and mock ads for Marvel issues of the 1960s!

Bruce Timm does a great pseudo-Kirby job on the lead story, "The Death Trap of Doctor Doom", wherein the newly-formed AVENGERS are sent to secure the flying fortress which Doctor Doom recently used against the Fantastic Four, but the team discovers the vehicle is full of traps set by Doom. Fortunately, there's one thing Doom hadn't counted on: Ant-Man has a new identity as Giant-Man!

In addition to this chuckle-filled 24-page story, this issue contains pinups by Paul Smith, Dick Ayers and Bruce Timm, an Anti-Drug PSA with Spider-Man, a letters page written in the style of the letters pages from the 1960's with letters "written" by Ty Templeton, Kurt Busiek and Burt Kusiek, and fake advertisements for Kid Colt Outlaw #112.5 and Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #3.5.
