DC Comics finally got into the 'Barbarian/Adventurer/Sword and Sorcery' genre of the 1970s and 80s a bit after Marvel's CONAN THE BARBARIAN had awed and energized fandom years earlier. Here is their second (after a few years of 'WARLORD' issues) foray into the world of evil wizards and mythic monsters - ARAK / SON OF THUNDER #1.

Legendary writer/editor ROY THOMAS had come over to DC from Marvel just a year earlier, and brought with him his undisputed talent in scripting the adventures of sword-swinging men of cunning and strength. Roy and his wife, Dann, wanted to create a character who was noble, and a bit different than the current crop, and jointly came up with Native North American ARAK, a young Amerindian discovered adrift at sea and rescued by a band of Vikings who had been blown off course.

Adopted into their 'tribe', ARAK flourished and impressed the Northerners with his skills in battle, and his eagerness to learn and succeed in his new home! The years passed, with ARAK accompanying the Vikings as they raided villages and monasteries, until the fateful day they encountered a sorceress who controlled a sea monster and all of ARAK's 'family' were slaughtered, before he by himself, killed the Beast.

This set him free to wander Europe and experience adventure after adventure, for the next 49 issues, until 1985.

This is a great copy of arak / son of thunder #1 with a strong binding, supple pages, glossy covers, minimal toning, and no tears, creases or pieces missing. We conservatively grade this an 8.0 vf.
