STEVE DITKO, the creator and main artist for SPIDER-MAN comics since 1962, handles pencils, inks and plotting here for AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #18, as the Wall-Crawler takes on the SANDMAN . . with a little help from the FANTASTIC FOUR!!

In the 22-page story, "The END of Spider-Man!", with the entire city thinking he is a coward, SPIDER-MAN runs from SANDMAN. Peter's life is in shambles, and he contemplates giving up being SPIDER-MAN to concentrate on his personal life.

As part of the public's ridicule - and the superhero community's concern - over SPIDER-MAN's seeming cowardice, there are cameo appearances by the Fantastic Four, The Avengers, Daredevil, Kraven the Hunter, The Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and The Vulture!

And we get the first appearance of Ned Leeds, as he goes on a date with Betty Brant - the man who later becomes the HOBGOBLIN!

This is a nicely solid and decent copy of SPIDER-MAN #17, but there are afew rough page edges, a front cover bent corner, ball-point pen writing on the first page, a 2" separation of the cover at the top if the spine, and one detached page that is present in-place. Those are the main detractors, but the binding is strong, the color is good, and the pages have less-than-normal toning. Overstreet prices this 58-year old issue in a grade of 4.0 VG at $100 (largely due to only the 3rd appearance of SANDMAN) . . . but we think $88 is much more reasonable!
