Item Description
ADVENTURE COMICS was originally known as NEW COMICS, but after issue #11, the title changed to NEW ADVENTURE COMICS until issue #32, when it changed again to ADVENTURE COMICS. The final issue of the original series was in 1983.From 1938 to 1946, ADVENTURE COMICS_ _starred a number of Golden Age superheroes, including the Sandman, Hourman, Starman, and Manhunter, with a variety of backup features including Shining Knight, Genius Jones, Barry O'Neill, Cotton Carver, and Steve Conrad: Adventurer. In 1946, all previous features were cancelled and SUPERBOY, Aquaman, and Green Arrow were transferred from MORE FUN COMICS and they remained the series' main features well into the 1960s.
So much for history! :o) Here in issue #306 from 1963, SUPERBOY is the main attraction in the lead story, 'The 5th Dimensional High School!', wherein a teenage Mxyzptlk plays pranks on Smallville in order to do well in his 5th dimensional practical joking class! Written by Otto Binder and illustrated by George Papp, it's kind of a silly story, but amusing, and also features Lana Lang, Krypto, and other members of the SUPERBOY 'family'.
The back-up tale, 'The Legion of Substitute Heroes!', introduces the fun group of young 'heroes' who have been rejected for membership in the vaunted LEGION OF SUPERHEROES, and who band together as the LEGION OF SUBSTITUTE HEROES and thwart the Plant Men's scheme to take over the Earth. Featured are Polar Boy, Night Girl, Stone Boy, Fire-Lad, and Chlorophyll Kid, all nicely illustrated by John Forte.
This is a nice-looking copy of one of DC's best-selling 1963 titles. It's in great shape for being 61 years old, with a good binding, minimal toning, and good color. No major faults or blemishes - just a few nicks and ragged edges, . . . and unfortunately, a rather well-done addition of sideburns to SUPERBOY'S haircut on the cover!! We grade it a solid 5.0 VG/FN, which Overstreet values at $30 . . . but if you're a SUPERBOY lover, you'll love our price of $14 . . with our always-L•O•W shipping!
