Spider-Woman #41 La Morte de Jessica

Issue Description

Morgan Le Fay appears before Jessica Drew, in her office. Drew lashes out at the ephemeral Morgan Le Fay, with her bio-venom, felling her friend, Lindsay McCabe, instead. Drew tends to McCabe, who is only stunned. McCabe takes Drew to an Arthurian-themed renaissance fair. As Drew dons her period-themed costume, an enchantment washes over the park. Drew is slow to pick up on the changes, believing that the other patrons are merely acting in character. Drew soon discovers that the other patrons believe Drew to be Morgan Le Fay. Drew is tricked into fully embracing the enchantment.

Drew's boyfriend, David Ishima, has been transformed into Sir Lancelot, a Knight of the Round Table. McCabe is Lady Guinevere, the wife of King Arthur, but lover of Sir Lancelot. All are forced to play out their written roles. When "Sir Lancelot" spurns "Morgan Le Fay's" affections, the evil sorcerous begins to cast a terrible spell upon him. The sound of a passenger plane's engine, flying high over head, wrench Drew from Morgan Le Fay's enchantment. Drew tries desperately to hold onto her reality, as Morgan Le Fay's enchantment sweeps over her anew. Knowing the dire fate in store for her friends, Drew rushes to save them.

To root herself in reality, Drew decides to don her Spider-Woman costume. Morgan Le Fay confronts Drew, and magically clads Drew in the costume.The Spider-Woman lashes out at Morgan Le Fay, but once again, her bio-venom burst passes, harmlessly, through the wraith-like Morgan Le Fay. The Spider-Woman's attack, though, does have the misfortune of igniting her tent. The Spider-Woman flees the burning tent, and soars high over "Camelot". The Spider-Woman sees "Guinevere" about to be burned at the stake for her infidelities. Morgan Le Fay appears, as a great dragon, and ignites the funeral pyre. Morgan Le Fey reveals that "Guinevere" is protected within a mystic shield.

All the Spider-Woman has to do, to save her friend's life, is to swear her obedience to Morgan Le Fay. The Spider-Woman leaps through Morgan Le Fay's ephemeral dragon form, and rescues "Guinevere". The fare patrons surround them, and attempt to fulfill the King's punishment. The Spider-Woman flees, with "Guinevere". The Spider-Woman reaches McCabe's car, only to be surrounded by the park patrons. The Spider-Woman leaps high into the air, and bombards the renaissance fairgrounds with an epic bio--venom burst, rendering all unconscious. The effort, though, has left the Spider-Woman feeling spent.

The Spider-Woman takes up "Excalibur", to defend herself against Morgan Le Fay. Once more, Morgan Le Fay threatens "Guinevere's" life, to force the Spider-Woman to submit to her. The Spider-Woman fires a weak burst of bio-venom to distract Morgan Le Fay. In that moment's distraction, the Spider-Woman hurls "Excalibur" through Morgan Le Fay, severing her connection to the modern world. Before she vanishes, Morgan Le Fay vows to return. The park, as well as the patrons, return to normal, with no memory of ever being under Morgan Le Fay's enchantments. The Spider-Woman, though, is left with many unanswered questions, regarding her past. Questions raised by Morgan Le Fay, concerning her origins, and potential connection to the Darkhold, and it's master, Chthon.
