Issue Description
Carrying the unconscious body of the Shroud, the Spider-Woman is ambushed by the Cult of Kali, within the Hatros Institute for Emotional Research. Mistakenly believing the Shroud is working with the Cult of Kali, the Spider-Woman hurls the Shroud into the group. When cultists move to stab the Shroud to death, the Spider-Woman intervenes, to save his life. The Cult of Kali are taken aback to discover their symbol burned into the Shroud's face. Suddenly, the room is plunged into darkness. The Spider-Woman can hear the sounds of combat, but can see nothing. When the light returns to the room, the Cult of Kali has been beaten into unconsciousness, and the Shroud is nowhere to be seen. The Spider-Woman, as Jessica Drew, calls the police to report the attack.
When she returns to the room where the Cult of Kali were lying unconscious, she finds that they have gone. S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Jerry Hunt and Laura Brown, investigate the disappearance of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Jeffrey Cochren. After giving her report to the police, Drew returns home. At the Hatros Institute, Drew continues with her therapy. Unbeknownst to Drew, she is being observed, surreptitiously, by Adrienne Hatros, the head of the institute. Drew is introduced to Lindsay McCabe. Unlike most people, McCabe doesn't find Drew repellent. Drew begins an investigation into the Cult of Kali. Drew learns that a jade idol of Kali has been stolen, from a local museum. Drew, as Spider-Woman, visits known underworld hangouts, to garner information about the theft.
Shaking down a crook called "Weasel", the Spider-Woman's investigation leads her to the houseboat of the Warleggin gang. The Spider-Woman storms the boat, quickly taking out all but the leader of the gang. The gang leader flees in a speedboat. The Spider-Woman gives chase, dodging gunfire the whole way. Finally, the Spider-Woman alights on the speedboat, and capsizes it. After swimming the gang leader back to the dock, the Spider-Woman learns that the museum theft has no connection to the Cult of Kali. Exhausted after spending the evening following a blind lead, the Spider-Woman returns home. The Spider-Woman, as Drew, takes a long shower, Emerging from the shower, Drew finds the Shroud waiting for her.
