The Mummy's Soul (16 pages)
Dr. Adam Spektor and his secretary Lakota Rainflower travel to Egypt at the invitation of Spektor's old friend, Egyptologist Professor William Daugherty to attend the opening of the newly discovered tomb of ancient sorcerer Ra-Ka-Tep. On discovering the mummified remains of the sorcerer, Daugherty is disturbed to find that the mummy is not wearing the golden mask which was supposed to have been used to trap Ra-Ka-Tep's soul within his earthly body.
Meanwhile, in the nearby Temple of Anubis, Ra-Ka-Tep himself is using magic to observe the discovery of his mummified remains. Ra-Ka-Tep reveals how he had stolen the earthly form of a graverobber who had tried to steal his golden mask, recapping the mummy's first appearance in Mystery Comics Digest #1. Ra-Ka-Tep now plans to steal back his own mummy.
That night, Spektor and Lakota stay at the tomb to read some hieroglyphs. When Lakota goes to get some food, Spektor observes from a hiding place when Ra-Ka-Tep enters the tomb and uses the mystic mask to return himself to his mummy body. At that moment, Lakota returns, and Ra-Ka-Tep is instantly smitten with her beauty. Spektor and Lakota scuffle with the living mummy, but Ra-Ka-Tep chokes Spektor into unconsciousness and carries off Lakota.
Having used yoga trance techniques to survive the attack of the mummy, Spektor realizes where the mummy must have taken Lakota and sets off for the Temple of Anubis. When Spektor arrives at the temple, Ra-Ka-Tep sees by Lakota's reaction that she has feelings for the Doctor, so after overpowering Spektor, he uses the mask to switch bodies with the Doctor. As the real Spektor falls to the ground in the mummy's lifeless body, Ra-Ka-Tep, in Spektor's form, pretends to rescue Lakota, and asks her to marry him.
Having used a counterspell to Ra-Ka-Tep's attack, Spektor manages to regain consciousness in the mummy form. He pursues Ra-Ka-Tep, who is alarmed to find that his magic has no effect on the mummy. Ra-Ka-Tep runs away in panic, leaving Lakota alone to face the mummy. Unable to talk in the mummy's body, Spektor makes his way past Lakota and chases Ra-Ka-Tep up the side of the temple to the roof. There, the two fight until they finally plummet into the waters of the Nile below. Under water, Spektor takes advantage of Ra-Ka-Tep's panic to use the mask and switch their bodies back.
Professor Daugherty arrives to take Spektor and Lakota back to civilization. Lakota says she can't marry a man who left her at the mercy of a monster. Spektor decides he will explain about the body transference as they take in the magnificent sights of Egypt.
A Weird New World for Joe Matucha (9 pages)
N'Baza, an African witch doctor, performs a ritual at the City of Gorillas in the heart of the jungle, where he offers a treasure in gold to the Gorilla God. Joe Matucha, a tribesman who has lived in the city, scoffs at N'Baza, who warns him of the dangers of heresy. Matucha goes into the jungle and kills a gorilla, fashioning a costume from the animal's remains. The next time N'Baza performs the ceremony, Matucha arrives in his gorilla suit to take the gold. N'Baza realizes he has been tricked and follows Matucha into the jungle. Matucha attacks N'Baza and plans to kill the old man, but some passing hunters think he is an attacking gorilla and shoot at him. Matucha escapes into the jungle as N'Baza casts the Curse of the Gorilla God on him. In the jungle, Matucha finds the Gorilla God's gold, but is unable to remove his costume. Other gorillas begin to arrive, and Matucha is trapped among them.
Note: Professor William Daugherty was a real-life Egyptologist and a friend of Spektor writer Don Glut. Artist Jesse Santos used photo references to put him into the story.
