Issue Description
Superman takes out an alien probe that was placing astronauts in suspended animation. Superman follows the probe back to the planet Nyrvn, finding the world embroiled in an intergalactic war. Superman wipes out the Nyrvn's entire fleet of starships. Turning toward Nyrvn, he is confronted by four members of the Legion of Super-Heroes. The Legionnaires ask Superman not to intervene in the Nyrvn's war, nor disrupt their culture, as, many years in the future, the Nyrvn will side with Earth against intergalactic invaders, in the Millennium War. It is only because Nyrvn has had thousands of years to perfect it's weapons of war that Earth survives. Reluctantly, Superman returns to earth. The Legionnaires set about reversing the damage Superman did to the Nyrvan fleet, while also preventing any more loss of life in the conflict. Back in Metropolis, Superman resumes his Clark Kent identity. Running into Steve Lombard in the hallway of the Galaxy Broadcasting building, Kent is informed that he has a visitor waiting for him in his office. It is Pete Ross, Kent's old friend from Smallville. Ross reveals that he's always known Kent was Superman. He needs Kent's help, to rescue his son, Jon Ross, from alien kidnappers. Ross provides Kent with a sketch of the alien craft that abducted his son. It is of Nyrvn design. On Nyrvn, the Legionnaires seek out Jon Ross. At first believing the Legion has come to rescue him, Ross is crestfallen when they tell him that he must remain on Nyrvan, as one day he will be it's greatest military leader. Scanning his mind with her telepathy, Saturn Girl learns that Ross knows Superman's true identity.
Anticipating the Man of Steel's return to Nyrvn, the Legionnaires set out to intercept him. Superman races back to Nyrvn. Suddenly, his speed dramatically increases, until he's moving so fast he breaks the time barrier. Looking back, Superman sees that it is Dawnstar who is pushing him forward through time. Dawnstar forces the Man of Steel to bear witness to the ultimate battle of the Millennium War, where Nyrvn and Earth have joined forces to save the galaxy. Unwilling to standby in the face of such carnage, Superman moves to intervene, and is immediately laid low by millions of stellar energy weapons. The Legionnaires pull Superman's unconscious body aboard the Time Bubble. Unwilling to live with the idea of the Nyrvn's slaughtering their enemies for another millennia, Superman sets about creating a new enemy for Nyrvn to war against. Soon a gigantic, artificial world descends on Nyrvn. The Nyrvn fleet moves to intercept it, and thus, the Millennium War begins. The globe is piloted by Superman robots, and protected by robot drones. Armed with weapons technology from the 30th century, the computers controlling the artificial world will slowly escalate the war, forcing the Nyrvn's to continue to adapt and develop their own war technologies. Without any further loss of life, the Nyrvn's will still fulfill their destiny to stand with Earth in the Millennium War. Superman returns to Earth, to inform Pete Ross that history prevents Superman from rescuing Ross' son, Jon. Ross refuses to accept Superman's reasoning, and vows vengeance on the Man of Steel.
