Volume Description
After the successful launches of TV Century 21 and Lady Penelope, aimed at teenage boys and teenage girls respectively, Century 21 Publications decided that their third title, produced via their partnership with City Magazines, would be aimed at younger children, a "nursery-type magazine." Century 21 owner Gerry Anderson had tried unsuccessfully to sell a new puppet series, Candy and Andy, and when no studios opted to go for it, he instead used the characters as the stars of his new comic, with the female puppet, Candy, providing the comic's title. The first issue of Candy was cover dated Saturday 21st January 1967 but released to the shops for sale from Wednesday 18th January 1967. It featured photo covers created using Anderson's puppets, and lasted 154 issues. Candy and Andy also went on to star in several picture books and annuals. Other strips were sourced from children's TV programmes outside Anderson's stable of shows, including Winnie the Pooh, William Timyn's Bengo the Boxer Pup, Maria Perego's mouse Topo Gigio and ATV's koalas Tingha and Tucker.
